User Reviews about Garmin nüvi 550 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
I recently used the Nuvi 550 with a RAM GPS Mount on a 2k+ mile motorcycle trip and found it very useful. Knowing what lane to be in at intersections is a big plus. Overall, the navigation was flawless and got me to my destinations with ease. It doesn't have all of the features of the Zumo series (Bluetooth, tactile buttons, weather, traffic), but for a basic, waterproof GPS it's great and the price is right. The voice prompts aren't of much use on the road with full-face helmet, but simply looking at the screen now and then is good enough. The touch screen menus are easily navigated even with gloves. I added a USB charging cable to my bike before the long trip, but previously used just the battery (and a backup battery). -- Decent Motorcycle GPS
I bought this Nuvi to use on my boat while visiting the St. Lawrence Seaway and ended up using it in my car as well. The Nuvi product is quite well known and easy to use. The 550 is waterproof and well suited for outdoor activities. I found that using the product with the Garmin Blue Chart software package provided all the information I needed to safely navigate the St. Lawrence - all channels, launches, and marinas are clearly marked and accurate. The only issue is the need to keep purchasing maps sets for various activities - to view details for my local freshwater lakes and rivers, I'll have to buy the Inland Lakes and Waterways map set since the Blue Chart map set only covers the Great Lakes and coastal waters. I would also have to buy the topographic maps for my area if I want to use this for hiking. Other than the need to continue to buy additional map sets, this unit functions perfectly and is easy to use. -- Nuvi 550 - great for car, hiking, and boat!
This is the 3rd Garmin I've used and have found them all to perform well. This one is mounted on a motorcycle that I use for long 5000 mile road trips. I can find gas stations, meals, and motels while I ride on the touch screen with gloves on. I appreciate the low cost (as compared to the Zumo, a motorcycle specific GPS) and the small size, and this model can be left on the bike while riding in the rain, saving me the trouble of the unhooking and hiding necessary with other models. The screen is bright enough to be read in the sunlight with dark glasses on, and the routing and re-routing are usually spot on. As with all of these devices, they occasionally make mistakes, the databases never being perfect, but Garmin is the best I've seen, and that's the important issue.
Don't expect the map relief features to be useful with this model as they only appear on "wide shots", and for motorcyling it's preferable to use the close up 3D view when riding in the twisty places. -- Simple, functional, accurate
This thing is great. Cruise past a changing speed limit sign and it changes on the NUVI as well.
Works great on a Harley. If it takes that vibration, it's good. It's also gotten wet, but didn't hurt it.
I bought it on Amazon, it was on sale. With that I got a home charger,a spare battery, and the handle bar mount for under $300.00. -- Great for the bike
Works great and I love the touch screen it reminds me of the iPhone. Must have for any street bike rider -- High quality
